Paratransit/Microtransit
Maintenance and Mobility Center
Project Overview
Chatham Area Transit (CAT) is evaluating sites across Chatham County for a new Paratransit/Microtransit Maintenance and Mobility Center. The facility will allow CAT to better serve the community by adding more space and technology to maintain and charge a fleet of fully electric paratransit and microtransit vehicles.
CAT needs your help to identify a preferred site for this facility. Go to Site Selection page to learn about the site selection process and give your input!
Process
A site screening and site selection process was initiated in 2023, along with a planning and environmental screening. These tasks have continued into 2024. Engagement with stakeholders and the public will kick-off with two meetings in Spring 2024.
Fleet Description
CAT Mobility: Paratransit
CAT's paratransit service, CAT Mobility, is specifically designed to transport eligible persons with disabilities in Chatham County in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. People who qualify for this transportation service include those who have a permanent or temporary physical or mental disability.
All standard CAT buses contain features and equipment that allow passengers with disabilities to board, ride, and exit vehicles easily and safely. Visit the CAT Mobility website for more information.
CAT SMART: Microtransit
Microtransit allows public transit to expand coverage and improve flexibility for passengers by adopting the technology and service models of ride-hailing services such as Uber or Lyft.
In 2023, CAT was awarded federal grant funds through the Federal Transit Administration's Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) program to pilot microtransit service in Chatham County and the City of Savannah.
Grant funding allowed for the development of microtransit in three high-need locations: Northwest Chatham County, West Chatham County, and East Savannah. CAT's microtransit service will launch March 25, 2024.
